After 13 years, Co-operation Ireland’s Maracycle challenge makes a welcome return.
The DHL supported event will take place over the weekend of 26-27 June 2010 and the return route between Belfast and Dublin will cover just over 200 miles.
Peter Sheridan, Chief Executive of Co-operation Ireland said, “We have brought back the Maracycle due to popular demand as so many people have expressed an interest in cycling between the capital cities of Belfast and Dublin. The route is challenging but achievable and it has been chosen with the safety of cyclists at the fore. A number of shorter options are also available, so it can be a real family event.”
Terry O'Neill, Event Manager explained the Maracycle route, “We are keeping off the main route as such as possible. On Day 1, from the start in Belfast we will head towards Lisburn and on towards Moira, Banbridge, Camlough and on to Dundalk. From there the route will continue on to Castlebellingham, Dunleer, Droghea, Naul and finishing at Dublin City University in the northside of Dublin. The following day, the route will be reversed.”
The official restpoint stop in Dundalk has been supported by Marshes Shopping Centre and Louth County Council. Harry Traynor , Marshes Centre Manager has already signed up for the challenge.
Upwards of a thousand cyclists are expected to take to the roads for Maracycle. It has the backing of cycling and sporting bodies throughout the island of Ireland, but it is not just an event for club cyclists.
Terry explains, “This is a challenge which can be taken up by anyone provided they follow the training schedule. It is an excellent opportunity to meet new people from all over the island and beyond, whilst enjoying the often overlooked beautiful countryside between Belfast and Dublin.”
By partaking in the challenge, cyclists can raise money for Co-operation Ireland, whose aim is to promote improved relations between communities in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland. The charity allows people the opportunity to come together to explore common issues, thereby developing mutual understanding and respect. Hundreds of other charities will also benefit, through the efforts of the participants.
The magnitude of such an event dictates that many organisations are involved in the planning and promotion of the event. Local Authorities, Sport NI and a network of emergency and voluntary services as well as the media are all involved and it is through the efforts of such organisations that the event can become a success.
